Title: Creative Engagement: Collaborative Story Making and Poetry Writing with People Living with Dementia

Summary Statement: Please come explore valuing all members of our community, cultivating connection and creativity in the context of cognitive entropy, and replacing the pressure to remember with the freedom to imagine.

Carrie Vitko is speech-language pathologist living in Bloomsburg who has a passion for helping people of all ages and abilities find a meaningful place in their communities.  She’s been a practicing SLP for over 25 years, working in multiple settings – to include but not limited to home health and hospice, early intervention, and long-term care. Carrie’s current full-time work involves supporting the complex communication needs of young children in a rural school setting, but for the last ten years she’s made creative engagement with folks living with dementia and other neurogenic challenges a beloved side quest.

August 1, 2024

Featured Poet: Carol Ann Heckman at Kocher Park

Theme: Connecting with animals in our lives, on any level, is the theme. Since the pandemic, I have been exploring a deepened connection with animals as it expresses in poetry. Relationships with pets or wild animals, dream imagery, imaginary animals, animals used in expressions (the cat’s meow; a monkey’s uncle; dumb like a fox). Bring your poems about animals, or your favorite poet’s poems, to share—anything is fair game.” Picnic: Bring something to eat; bring your own food and beverage.                            Wear insect repellent.
